At last the time came - and the great forerunner of the Messiah began his preaching. John appeared in the wilderness, because the people were under God's displeasure. He preached repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He preached both God's severity and God's kindness - wrath was coming, but people could be graciously and completely forgiven.
