John the Baptist's preaching had a great effect. Many people turned from their wrong ways of life, back to the Lord. People then began to wonder - is this the promised one? John put them right, and in doing so, gave us a most helpful explanation of the worthiness and the work of Christ. John moreover modeled for us a faithful servant of the Lord - faithful through trials and even to death.
